Our Therapy Services

The Children’s Therapy Center provides physical, occupational and speech therapy on an individual basis and music therapy by class. A team approach is utilized by staff, who meet regularly to continually review and discuss each child's needs. Therapeutic services are provided either within our cheerful, well equipped treatment spaces or within the classroom, depending on what is best for the child at the time. The frequency of therapy is determined by the child’s IEP.

Physical Therapy

The Physical Therapy department staff provides services which address the needs of the children which have been determined through the evaluation process. Our goal is to facilitate development and improve the functional abilities of each child through the use of therapeutic exercise of handling techniques, therapeutic taping, adapted seating and standers, assistive devices such as gait trainers or the “Lite Gait Walkable” and other age appropriate treatment adjuncts such as adapted tricycles and scooters.

Sessions take place in our large, state-of-the art treatment space where we enjoy motivating the children with activities which are age appropriate and fun while they work toward furthering their independence. Therapists work closely with families to provide support, offer assistance with adapted equipment for the home as well as other equipment needs, such as orthotics. Monthly Physiatry clinics are held to problem solve and further offer support to our families in meeting the unique needs of each child.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy focuses on enhancing performance in the daily occupations of a child such as participating in school, playing with other children and eating lunch.  Our therapists provide evaluation and treatment in the areas of fine-motor and visual-motor development, sensory-processing abilities, self-care skills and need for specialized equipment (e.g., splints or adapted feeding utensils).  Functional activities are utilized during therapy sessions to address skill development.  A child may work on grasp by using a shaker during music and then focus on developing greater independence in feeding by learning to use a fork during lunch.  Specialized equipment, including weighted vests, angled spoons and adapted art materials are provided by therapists to enhance a child’s ability to participate in daily activities encountered throughout the school day.

Speech/Language Therapy

Speech Therapists offer sessions in the areas of oral motor function, feeding skills, speech productivity and expressive and receptive language development.  Alternative and/or augmentative means of communication may be incorporated into therapy to facilitate speech and language development.  Each therapy room is equipped with state-of-the-art technology including computers, touch screens, various switches and numerous voice output systems.

Feeding Therapy is offered during the classroom lunch and snack times. The focus is to safely expand upon current feeding skills to improve chewing, drinking and overall oral management of foods.

Music Therapy

The Music Therapy Program is designed to guide students toward increasing self-expression.  During a session, students are provided with opportunities to increase play skills while exploring a variety of instruments, strengthen fine and gross motor coordination skills and increase communication skills through vocalization or adaptive devices.
